Fighting the silent killer: Hypertension

(KPLC) – High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often called the silent killer. It can affect anyone, even those who spend their lives helping others stay healthy.

One Southwest Louisiana doctor said his journey with high blood pressure changed the way he approaches care.

“I was huffing and puffing and screaming when they went to check my blood pressure. My blood pressure was 160 over like 120, it skyrocketed through the roof, and I remember looking at that number like ‘I’ve never had high blood pressure before, what’s going on?’” Dr. Brenton Smith said.

High blood pressure often comes with no symptoms, but it can lead to serious health problems like heart disease or stroke. Doctors say it doesn’t discriminate based on age or lifestyle, and the key to control is early action.

Dr. Smith from Imperial Health described some possible symptoms of high blood pressure.

“You can be walking around with your blood pressure being in the 200s and not have any symptoms. If you do have symptoms, the most common symptoms would be a headache or lightheadedness or feeling dizzy, maybe some shortness of breath or chest pain,” Smith said.

While medication can help manage blood pressure, fitness experts say a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and stress management can make a lasting difference and even prevent high blood pressure altogether.

Katie Little, a women’s health specialist and creator of the metabolic rebalancing method, explained what exercises you can do to remain healthy.

“The truth is blood pressure doesn’t just rise from poor genetics or high stress environments, it rises because it’s literally your body screaming for movement, and you’re ignoring it,” Little said. “If you’re consistent with the 10-minute walks or mobility stretching, maybe just two to four percent of your day, it’s going to pay out in the long run.”

Experts also recommend checking your blood pressure regularly, even if you feel fine. Whether it’s through small steps or expert advice, managing high blood pressure starts with awareness.
